Report: Don’t expect the Vikings, Kirk Cousins to agree on a new contract immediately

The Vikings extending Kirk Cousins would work for a lot of reasons.

First, Minnesota could ease the cap hit that his current salary puts on this season, helping them sign talent around him. Second, the Vikings could keep Cousins happy by giving him more years with the team.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler heard about the situation, and it seems like Minnesota is not going to immediately extend Cousins.

Here’s what they wrote:

“We will be surprised if the Vikings quarterback doesn’t get extended at some point his offseason, as the team needs cap room and reworking Cousins’ $31 million cap hit creates it. But we’re also told the Vikings are in no major rush at this point and could wait until after the draft to seriously work on this if necessary. They have options with other contracts. Releasing defensive tackle Linval Joseph and cornerback Xavier Rhodes would provide nearly $20 million in cap room.”

Regardless of how you feel about Cousins, extending him is a good move. I don’t think he’d restructure for one year, but he might take less money for 2020 if an extension was given. There has to be something on his end of the bargain, and in this situation, that’s more years on the team.
