What the Miami Dolphins have done on defense this offseason has been pretty impressive. They’ve addressed their two biggest questions by re-signing Emmanuel Ogbah and restructuring/extending Xavien Howard’s contract to keep them happy.
On top of those moves, they’ve brought back most of their free agents on that side of the ball, including nearly all of their linebackers. With that being said, they should still be looking to add more.
According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Dolphins are working out former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster. While that name would’ve caused a much bigger stir a few years back, now, it’s not as impactful.
Foster, 27, was the No. 31 pick of the 2017 draft, as he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers. There, he overlapped with Mike McDaniel and Jon Embree.
In his first season with the 49ers, he started only 10 games due to an ankle injury, recording 72 total tackles and five quarterback hits. He looked like he could’ve been a solid starter in this league if he could stay healthy. However, in 2018, after numerous legal issues, including domestic violence charges that were eventually dropped, he was released by San Francisco.
He was claimed by Washington but didn’t play during the rest of the 2018 season, and, in his first practice of 2019, he tore his ACL. This cost him the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
In 2021, Foster worked out for multiple teams but was never signed.
At this point, signing Foster would be a lottery ticket, on the field. If Miami brought him in on a minimum deal with no guaranteed money they could see how the summer and training camp goes without much risk. If it doesn’t work, they can just cut him and move on.
