Report: DeAndre Hopkins wants new deal

The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly agreed to a trade that will bring them star receiver DeAndre Hopkins. It looks like the Cardinals got he better end of the deal by far. However, there is apparently a reason why the Houston Texans were willing to trade him.

With three years remaining on his current contract, he wants a new deal, according to multiple reports.

The first came from the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain.

The Athletic’s Scott Bordow also reported it.

Hopkins has three years remaining on his current deal. It pays him $12.5 million in 2020, $13.5 million in 2021 and more than $13.9 million in 2022. However, none of the money is guaranteed.

The Cardinals could simply put some guarantees in his deal, paying some up front without adding any new money to the deal. That could even reduce his cap hit in 2020.

However, he likely is looking for guaranteed money and new money on top of that.

The Cardinals will have agreed to the trade knowing this information so it will be interesting to see if anything happens in the weeks to come with his contract.
