Report: Dalvin Cook extension is next up for the Vikings

The Vikings missed out on securing a trade for Trent Williams after the tackle went from the Redskins to the 49ers, but there is an upside to that: money.

Minnesota almost certainly has more cap space than it otherwise would had it traded for the tackle. So what’s on the docket for the team? According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, an extension for running back Dalvin Cook.

Cook was reportedly planning to participate in the team’s virtual OTAs. And the Vikings currently have over $12.2 million in cap space for 2020, per Over The Cap.

There are plenty of pros and cons to the Vikings extending Cook, but if the team can structure the contract in a way where there is not a lot of guaranteed money in the back years of the new contract, I could see it being a good call.

Cook ran for 1,135 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2019, both of which were career highs. Health has been a concern for Cook in the past, but when he’s on the field, he’s helped the Vikings offense greatly.
