Report confirms that Premier League giants Liverpool were interested in Bristol City starlet

A detailed report on Eddie Howe and Bournemouth has shed new light on Lloyd Kelly's transfer to the south coast.

The Athletic have explained in their feature on the Cherries' transfers this summer, that the Premier League side beat titans Liverpool to Kelly's signature back in May.

The Reds were long credited with an interest in the former Robins defender before this summer's deal.

And that is confirmed, with the article saying that Jurgen Klopp wished to make Kelly a long-term centre-back partner of Virgil van Dyke's.

While Kelly has moved up to the Premier League anyway, it goes to show the level of interest in Bristol City's young players.

As we reported, according to our sources, the full fee for Kelly will reach around £21m if all clauses are met.

Unfortunately for the centre-back cum left-back, Kelly is expected to be out injured for some time after picking up an injury in training, allegedly following a tackle from Harry Arter, who has since moved on loan to Fulham.

Kelly was recently back in BS3 as he returned to Ashton Gate to watch his former side take on Leeds United on the opening weekend of the Championship season.

The England U21 player remains close to several former Bristol City team-mates, including Jay Dasilva and Zak Vyner.

"We'll definitely still keep in touch. I still talk to him now and again and I was delighted for him to make that move up to the Premier League.

"Hopefully he can take his chance this season and really kick on," said Dasilva of his fellow Young Lion recently.
