Report: Colts to host RB Jay Ajayi on free agent visit

The Indianapolis Colts don’t have a need to add depth to the backfield, but that isn’t stopping them from looking at all of the available options in free agency, which includes former Philadelphia Eagles running back Jay Ajayi.

With the beginning of the new league year officially here, the Colts will reportedly host Ajayi on a free agent visit next week, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

A former fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, Ajayi has a history working with current Colts head coach Frank Reich as the two worked together during the Eagles’ championship run in 2017.

While Ajayi has a solid skill set that would work well in the Colts offense, the London native has dealt with injuries throughout his career. Not once has he played a full season and is coming off a 2018 campaign that ended after just four games due to a torn ACL.

Ajayi has had flashes of success, though. In 2016, he took 260 carries for 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns, which proved to be his best season as a professional.

The 25-year-old also averaged 5.8 yards per carry during the seven-game span he spent with the Eagles following the trade from the Miami Dolphins in 2017.

It will be interesting to see if anything comes of the visit, but it will be a development to keep an eye on next week.
