Report: Colts signing ex-Broncos QB Chad Kelly

The Indianapolis Colts are signing former Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly, according to a report from The Athletic’s Tim Graham.

Kelly, 25, was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Ole Miss. He spent his rookie season on injured reserve before earning a spot on the team’s 53-man roster in 2018.

Kelly’s time in Denver came to an end after he was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespassing on Oct. 23. The Broncos released him after that incident and he had remained a free agent until Saturday evening.

Kelly has dressed for just one regular season game in his career. He did have a good showing last preseason, completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 466 yards with three touchdown passes against two interceptions.

Hoping to return to the NFL, Kelly has been staying in shape and working out at a high school near Buffalo, New York. In Indianapolis, Kelly will likely compete with Jacoby Brissett and Phillip Walker for the team’s backup QB job behind starter Andrew Lock.

Denver, meanwhile, has changed its quarterback room a lot since parting ways with Kelly. Case Keenum has departed and Joe Flacco, Drew Lock and Brett Rypien have arrived. Rypien is among 14 undrafted free agents that the Broncos have signed so far.
