Report: Colts have talked with QB Philip Rivers

The legal tampering period has officially begun, and the Indianapolis Colts have already had discussions with free-agent quarterback Philip Rivers, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Rivers and the Colts have been linked all offseason and while it has been more of a suggestion, these talks seem to be heating up as free agency officially opens.

The need at quarterback has been well documented when it comes to the Colts. Jacoby Brissett didn’t show he is a long-term solution and while Rivers wouldn’t be either, the Colts might feel they could be more competitive with the veteran under center.

Rivers has been one of the best passers in the NFL for the better part of the last two decades. He saw a decline in 2019 when he completed 66% of his passes for 4,615 yards, 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. There are concerns about his decline.

However, he has worked with head coach Frank Reich for multiple seasons and found great success when they worked together. Whether that would be the case again remains to be seen, but Reich hasn’t been shy about praising the 38-year-old quarterback.

Rivers won’t be cheap for the Colts and will likely command somewhere around $27 million per season.

This will be something to monitor as the talks between the Colts and Rivers are heating up and actually gaining some substance.
