Report: Colts DC Matt Eberflus ‘early favorite’ for Texans job

The Houston Texans are reportedly very interested in Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to fill their coaching vacancy.

According to Ben Volin, senior NFL reporter for the Boston Globe, the Texans were pleased with Eberflus’ recent interview with the club and he is considered to be an early favorite.

The Texans have familiarity with Eberflus as he has been the Colts’ defensive coordinator since 2018. Aside from the 2019 campaign when the Colts finished 7-9, Indianapolis has had a solid defensive unit that has complement Frank Reich’s offensive schemes and aggressiveness.

Eberflus is also someone that quarterback Deshaun Watson might like. In fact, after the Texans’ 27-20 loss to the Colts on Dec. 20, which was a rematch from the previous two weeks between the two sides, Watson caught up with Eberflus in the tunnel at Lucas Oil Stadium to find out how he effectively adapted to the Texans’ offense.

The 50-year-old from Toledo, Ohio, was previously with the Dallas Cowboys as their linebackers coach from 2011-17. In the 2012 season, Eberflus was running the defensive meetings for defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. The other Ryan twin also employed Eberflus in the same capacity with the Cleveland Browns from 2009-10 under coach Eric Mangini.
