Report: Chiefs trade RB DeAndre Washington to Dolphins

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a trade ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline, but it’s not exactly what you’d expect from the team. Instead of trading for a player ahead of the deadline, the Chiefs are unloading a player from a crowded RB room after adding free-agent RB Le’Veon Bell.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport, the Chiefs have traded RB DeAndre Washington to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for draft pick compensation. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Dolphins will get a Washington and a seventh-round pick in 2021. The Chiefs will receive a sixth-round 2021 draft pick in return.

Washington was a free agent signing this offseason by the Chiefs, but he didn’t make the initial 53-man roster in Kansas City. He was only elevated to the 53-man roster ahead of the Week 5 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

While Washington was inactive in Week 8 against the New York Jets, he did see his Chiefs debut in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos. He carried the ball three times for five yards and caught a pass for two yards on the day.

Washington, of course, is a former college teammate of Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech. He was drafted by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft.

This isn’t a bad move from Brett Veach and the Chiefs’ front office. Washington wasn’t going to get much play in Kansas City with Le’Veon Bell in the fold. Given the uncertainty surrounding the 2021 salary cap, draft picks are the premium currency in the NFL. Moving up a few slots on Day 3 provides the team with more flexibility moving forward.
