Report: Chiefs to sign former Jaguars DE/LB Kamalei Correa

The Kansas City Chiefs have added another free agent, this time an intriguing veteran option along the defensive front seven.

According to Kansas City Star beat writer Sam McDowell, the Chiefs have signed former Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Kamalei Correa.

The 27-year-old was a second-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2016 NFL draft via Boise State. He didn’t see much action with the Ravens and was traded to the Tennessee Titans back in 2018. There he played 3-4 OLB and recorded 77 tackles and 8.5 sacks, which was the most productive period of his NFL career.

Correa fell out of favor with the team during the 2020 season and was traded to the Jaguars. Jacksonville ultimately released Correa after he left the team during the season for personal reasons.

This is an interesting signing for the Chiefs because he’s a bit of a tweener in terms of his size. He’s listed at 6-3 and 241 pounds, which is a little bit light for your traditional defensive end in the Steve Spagnuolo scheme. Correa is also a little bit too big to play off-ball linebacker in the scheme. He’ll most likely play defensive end, but he could be in line for some play as a rush linebacker. The team did this with former Chargers OLB Jeremiah Attaochu in 2019.

The Chiefs had already hit the 90-man roster limit, so in order to accommodate Correa, they’ll need to release a player to make room.
