Report: Chiefs to sign former Dolphins DB Adrian Colbert

The Kansas City Chiefs plan to make a roster move once a player completes his mandatory COVID-19 screening.

According to Yahoo Sports reporter Terez Paylor, the Chiefs will sign former Miami Dolphins defensive back Adrian Colbert. The 26-year-old safety was a seventh-round draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 out of the University of Miami, where he’d transferred after playing his first three seasons at the University of Texas.

Colbert appeared in six games and started five games for the Dolphins last season, playing 361 defensive snaps for the team. The team had tendered him a restricted free agent contract, but numerous additions at the position through free agency and the draft made Colbert expendable. They released him just two days ago.

Over the course of his career, Colbert has started in 17 games, recording 80 total tackles, two forced fumbles and eight passes defended. He hasn’t yet recorded an interception since he’s been in the NFL, but he did have two interceptions in college.

Colbert is listed at 6-foot and 200 pounds and runs in the 4.5-range. He has experience playing in the box and playing the deep safety spot. He’s not the rangiest safety out there, but he’s a big hitter and takes good angles to the football.

Chiefs starting safety Juan Thornhill is on the PUP list currently. If he remains on the PUP list to start the regular season, the earliest he could make his return is in Week 7. They recently added Tedric Thompson, but it seems they want to drum up more competition at that position group for the remainder of training camp.
