Report: Chiefs to open season on the road vs. Jaguars

We’ve got out first significant schedule leak, folks.

According to Terez Paylor of Yahoo Sports, the Kansas City Chiefs will open their season on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 8. This makes the third consecutive season that the Chiefs will open their season on the road.

The all-time series between the Chiefs and Jaguars is currently a 6-6 tie, but the Chiefs have won the last four meetings between the two teams. That includes the 2013 season opener where they defeated the Jaguars and continued to rattle off a nine-game winning streak.

The Chiefs also won their game against the Jaguars in 2018, when Duval’s finest came to Arrowhead Stadium with the NFL’s top-ranked defense. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs took care of business in that game, too.

The Jaguars, of course, have a new starting quarterback in 2019 – one the Chiefs are familiar with. The Jaguars signed Nick Foles this offseason to be their starting QB. Foles was drafted by Andy Reid in Philadelphia. He spent the 2016 season as the backup to Alex Smith with the Chiefs, but eventually ended up back with the Eagles, where he won a Super Bowl as their starting QB. Chiefs new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo also played against Foles as a coach in the NFC East. There is a good level of familiarity there.

The Jaguars also signed away the Chiefs No. 3 receiver in Chris Conley during the 2019 free agency period. He’ll have some familiarity with the Chiefs and Mahomes that he’ll be able to share with the Jaguars coaching staff.

On the surface, this looks like a pretty good starting point for the 2019 NFL season.
