Report: Chiefs RB LeSean McCoy to receive MRI on injured ankle

As the clock winded down in Sunday’s 28-10 win over the Oakland Raiders, the Kansas City Chiefs had a second running back sidelined due to injury.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs had Damien Williams suffer a knee contusion. New Chiefs RB LeSean McCoy then replaced him and after several carries left the game with an ankle injury. There were just over two minutes left to go in the game. It’s not ideal to lose both of your main running backs to injury in garbage time, but neither injury is suspected to be serious.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, McCoy is scheduled to have an MRI today. This is common-place after most injuries to assure that there is no accompanying ligament damage.

If the MRI reveals ligament damage and McCoy is out for any length of time, the Chiefs have some good options on the roster who can fill in. Rookie running back Darwin Thompson flashed some serious ability during the preseason. Veteran running back Darrel Williams provided some juice late in the 2019 season through the ground and the air.

It sounds like both of these injuries could be nothing more than ticky tacky stuff that doesn’t keep either RB sidelined for very long. However, it’s better to be safe than sorry with a player like McCoy, especially after making a solid financial investment on him in a one-year deal.
