Report: Chiefs interested in former Cardinals DE Markus Golden

It appears the Chiefs are looking into some remaining free agent edge rushers.

According to a new report from Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor, the Chiefs have expressed a level of interest in former Cardinals defensive end Markus Golden. Golden is a native of St. Louis and played collegiate football at the University of Missouri. There, he formed a dangerous duo on the edge with Shane Ray. Golden was drafted by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft, and has played there his entire career.

Golden tore his ACL during the 2017 season, and 2018 wasn’t quite the return to form he was hoping for. In 11 games started, Golden accumulated 30 tackles, five tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks. Under James Bettcher in 2016, Golden had a breakout season playing as a hybrid linebacker and defensive end. He had 12.5 sacks, 51 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles during that season.

If the Chiefs believe Golden can return to his 2016 form in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense, they should maintain a high level of interest in this player. They certainly have the need to add a veteran presence to the defensive line group with the subtractions of Justin Houston and Dee Ford. At worst, Golden would provide competitive depth to push the other edge players the Chiefs have on the roster.

Golden was teammates with recent addition Tyrann Mathieu during their time in Arizona. It’s possible that Mathieu could help K.C. draw Golden in. Keep an eye out in the coming days for a possible visit with the Chiefs.
