Contrary to earlier reports, the Kansas City Chiefs appear to be interested in a reunion with their starting center of the past two seasons.
According to a report from Kansas City Star beat writer Herbie Teope, the Chiefs are interested in bringing back Austin Reiter. Teope’s report suggests that the team has already offered a contract, one that he’s presumably weighing against other options. The change in heart from the team likely comes as a combination of a slow free-agent market and the limited options available at other positions of need along the offensive line, such as tackle.
Reiter was originally a waiver claim by the Chiefs shortly after 53-man roster cuts in 2018. He began his career in Kansas City as depth, working as an extra blocker on jumbo packages. He’d fill in for injured center Mitch Morse for a few games in 2018, which helped the team evaluate him as a future starter.

Since 2018, Reiter has appeared in 42 games for Kansas City, including 32 total starts. He’s surrendered just 3 sacks and 16 total pressures during his regular-season career with the Chiefs per Pro Football Focus. You have to go all the way back to Super Bowl LIV to find the last time that he surrendered a sack.
Reiter has also built some great chemistry with Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes over the past two seasons. Having him back in the fold would certainly help things in that regard.
