Report: Chiefs hosted OT Leonard Wester on a free agent visit

The Chiefs are doing some work on a potential swing tackle prospect.

They hosted former Buccaneers OT Leonard Wester for a free agent visit last week according to The Athletic’s Greg Auman. Wester wasn’t tendered by the Buccaneers after spending three seasons with the team. Under a new coaching staff this is the type of player that often gets the short end of the stick, but for the Chiefs he could be a diamond in the rough.

Wester fits the profile the Chiefs like for their offensive linemen. He’s listed at 6-foot-6 and just over 300 pounds. He’s quite athletic too, catching a touchdown pass on a tackle-eligible play against the Lions in 2017.

Wester played college football at Missouri Western State which is located in Saint Joseph, Missouri. It also happens to be the home of Chiefs training camp. So I imagine that Wester is quite familiar with the Chiefs and vice versa.

This is the type of player that the Chiefs could pick up and turn into a quality depth player after a little time in the system. The Chiefs have done well with players like that in the past, for instance guys like Jordan Devey and Bryan Witzmann.

Obviously, Wester hasn’t signed with the Chiefs, but that doesn’t mean he won’t join the team at some point. They’re being very patient with the free agent market right now and are doing their best not to overpay players.
