Report: Chargers re-sign safety Adrian Phillips

Chargers safety Adrian Phillips was a top priority to re-sign entering free agency. Philips will be returning in 2019, as Los Angeles has agreed to terms to bring him, according to ESPN’s Eric D. Williams.

General manager Tom Telesco stated that L.A. is very happy to have him back.

The re-signing marks the third one that the Chargers have made this offseason. The other two re-signed are defensive tackle Brandon Mebane and linebacker Denzel Perryman.

Phillips, 26, established himself as one of the top defenders in the 2018 season. He took over as the team’s dime linebacker after the Chargers were hit with various season-ending injuries at the position and excelled in that role.

Phillips led the league in special teams tackles with 19. He finished the season with 94 tackles (77 solo), 10 passes defensed, four tackles for loss and one interception. The former Texas product earned first team All Pro, Pro Bowl and Professional Football Writers of America All-NFL Team honors for his hard work on special teams.
