Report: Chargers, RB Melvin Gordon $2M-$3M apart in contract negotiations

The Chargers and running back Melvin Gordon remain at a dead end as Gordon has continued his holdout.

Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson reports that Los Angeles is standing pat with an offer that would pay him nearly $10 million a year, while Gordon is seeking a deal that would almost pay him $13 million annually.

L.A. is hoping to get a deal in the range of Falcons’ Devonta Freeman’s $41.25 million over five years, while Gordon’s side wants something around the $39 million over three years Cardinals’ David Johnson received.

Gordon is prepared to extend his holdout into the regular season if the Chargers don’t present him with the type of offer he’s seeking, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

In 2019, Gordon is set to make $5.6 million. That would put him as the 11th highest-paid running back this season.

Gordon has solidified himself as a key part of the offense, but his durability is concerning. The former Wisconsin product has played a full season once since being selected No. 15 overall in the 2015 NFL draft.

The team will depend on Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson, Detrez Newsome and Jeremy Cox until Gordon’s contract situation is resolved.
