Report: Chargers, QB Philip Rivers to address new deal next offseason

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is headed into the final year of his contract, but he’s in no rush to get a new deal.

Los Angeles will address Rivers’ contract after the 2019 season, per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Rivers has said he has every desire to play through 2020 when the team moves into their new stadium with the Rams.

Rivers signed an $83.3 million extension in 2015 and will make $16 million in 2019.

There’s no need to act quickly and put ink to paper as a security blanket. The veteran quarterback has managed to stay healthy throughout the course of his professional career, having never missed a regular-season game since he took over as starter in 2006.

Rivers, 37, has displayed no signs of aging either. The former North Carolina State product passed for 4,308 yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2018, leading Los Angeles to a 12-4 season.

Holding off on an extension for Rivers will allow the Chargers to focus more on running back Melvin Gordon, who’s holding out in hopes of a new contract.
