There were many anticipating that the Chargers would address the quarterback position when the NFL legal tampering period began on Monday.
Los Angeles made a hefty offer to veteran Tom Brady, but he ultimately agreed to a deal with the Buccaneers.
Despite the report of them being in the mix for Cam Newton, it appears that L.A. is going to hold off on addressing the position all together, for now.
According the NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Chargers are not expected to sign or trade for a quarterback. Tyrod Taylor will enter the 2020 regular season as the starter.
Coach Anthony Lynn has expressed his faith in Taylor in the starting role. General manager Tom Telesco has praised Easton Stick, too.
This doesn’t mean that Los Angeles won’t draft a signal-caller. Currently with the No. 6 overall selection, the team is in a great position to land one of the top options, including Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa or Oregon’s Justin Herbert.
Drafting a quarterback has always been the best option. By having a quarterback on a rookie deal, then they’re not paying a veteran top-of-the-market money, and can then use that cap space to address other positions of need.
Only time will tell if the Bolts do decide to add competition to the quarterback room come draft day.
