Report: Chargers’ Melvin Gordon not showing up to training camp today

Chargers running back Melvin Gordon is officially in a holdout status as he informed the team that he will not report to the start of training camp, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Gordon’s decision to not show up to camp comes as no surprise. His agent, Fletcher Smith said that he would not be at training camp without a new contract.

Gordon also said last week that he had told some of his teammates that he would threaten to hold out and that they had supported his decision.

Gordon wants to be a Charger but he knows that this will be his first and probably last time to cash in on a big paycheck. Knowing how other top running backs have been paid, he feels like he is worth around $13-14 million per year.

Gordon has until Week 10 to report to the team before his current deal gets pushed into 2020, meaning he would have to play on his fifth-year option again if there are no changes.

Until then, Los Angeles will open up training camp with Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson and Detrez Newsome as their main backs. Undrafted free agent Jeremy Cox will look to crack the 53-man roster, too.
