Report: Chargers’ Derwin James had screw that bent in foot

We know that Chargers safety Derwin James is expected to go undergo surgery, but now we know the exact date and exactly what happened when he injured his foot.

James had a screw inserted in his foot as a freshman at Florida State. Doctors determined the screw bent last week in Thursday’s joint practice with the Saints and it needs to be removed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

James’ surgery is scheduled for Thursday in North Carolina with foot surgeon Dr. Robert Anderson. Anderson is the same doctor that treated defensive end Joey Bosa’s foot in 2018.

James will need approximately three to four months to recover. Los Angeles will likely place him on the injured reserve with potential to return late in the season for a late push to the playoffs.

The All-Pro safety’s absence will be significant, but the team must move on to the next man. Adrian Phillips will most likely take over the strong safety spot, but they have the pieces to go another route if need be.
