Report: Celtics ‘seriously’ engaged in trade talks for Clint Capela

It is early in the process, but the Houston Rockets and the Boston Celtics have engaged in trade talks that would involve Clint Capela.

This would make sense for the Celtics, who could be losing starting point guard Kyrie Irving to free agency and may not be able to land big man Anthony Davis in free agency.

Capela, who is 25-years-old, would fit in with the Celtics. In 67 games last season, the big man averaged 16.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.

Capela signed a five-year, $90 million contract extension last summer, so that would be a pretty big amount of money to bring on board for the Boston front office.

It is unclear per Steve Kyler if that trade deal would involve the Rockets acquiring Rozier.

It would be interesting that Rozier would be someone the Rockets would be interested in acquiring. The back-up point guard had a very below average season last year, averaging just 9.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 0.3 blocks per game. But, the Rockets are clearly looking to shake up their roster this summer.

Per Marc Stein of the New York Times this past week:

The Rockets are indeed shopping everyone on the roster not named Harden. The complexities involved in moving Chris Paul, who at age 34 has three years and nearly $125 million left on his contract, have Houston officials actively exploring the trade market for Clint Capela, Eric Gordon and P.J. Tucker.

As one source with knowledge of the team’s thinking said, they are operating under the belief that at least one of those three mainstays will not be a Rocket next season.

There are a handful of teams reportedly interested in Rozier, including the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic.

Free agency officially begins on July 1 but the Celtics have until June 29 to extend a $4.3 million qualifying offer to Rozier, who becomes a restricted free agent this summer.

Last month, CelticsWire reported how Rozier seems all but ready to leave the Celtics.
