Report: Celtics hire Kara Lawson as an assistant coach

The Boston Celtics have some big free agency decisions to make in terms of what to do to help improve their roster to get back into contention in the Eastern Conference, most notably how to replace All-Stars Kyrie Irving and Al Horford as both guys are expected to leave in free agency. They made one move on Thursday that will bolster their coaching staff.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics will hire Washington Wizards television analyst Kara Lawson to Brad Stevens’ coaching staff. Lawson spent 12 seasons playing in the WNBA, made one All-Star appearance, and won an Olympic championship before she became an analyst for ESPN and for the Wizards.

The move is another great step in the right direction for women in basketball, and sports in general, as Lawson joins Becky Hammon with the San Antonio Spurs and Lindsey Harding with the Philadelphia 76ers as the only full time female assistant coaches in the NBA.
