Report: Celtics extend qualifying offer to Terry Rozier

It was always assumed to be the most likely scenario for the Boston Celtics but now there’s officially confirmation that the Celtics will extend a qualifying offer to point guard Terry Rozier to make him a restricted free agent (per The Athletic and Stadium’s Shams Charania).

Free agency begins on June 30 and Boston had until 5 p.m. to extend a qualifying offer to Rozier.

Rozier likely figures into Boston’s plans if they strike out on the major free agent point guards in Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker. Rozier has already expressed dissatisfaction with playing in a backup role and is undoubtedly looking to join a team — like the New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns or Orlando Magic — that could offer him a starring role.

The Celtics can match any contract Rozier signs but after reports that veteran big man Al Horford is leaving Boston because he’s looking for more money than the team is willing to offer, it’s unclear what the Celtics’ limit is for Rozier’s price point. Further, if they manage to sign Walker or if Irving does a complete about-face to re-sign with Boston, the locker room chemistry is sure to be a question.

After last season, that could be a question the Celtics can’t afford.

Rozier averaged 9.0 points, 2.9 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 0.9 steals per game in 2018-19 while shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from three.
