Report: Carolina Panthers plan to cut Cam Newton

The quarterback carousel in Carolina is claiming its biggest name. The Panthers plan to cut Cam Newton Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Newton was the teams’ first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after winning the Heiman and a national championship at Auburn.

Newton started 124 of the 125 game he played as a Panther. However, injuries sidelined him in the last two seasons. In 2019, Newton played in two games, losing both, before missing the rest of the season due to a Lisfranc injury. His season officially ended Nov. 5 when Carolina placed him on injured reserve.

He led Carolina to the Super Bowl in a 15-1 regular season in 2015. After a pair of playoff victories, Newton and the Panthers fell to the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.

The Panthers will have shed themselves of Newton as well as Kyle Allen, who was traded to Washington. Allen started 12 games in 2019, going 5-7. They have signed free-agent Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year, $63M contract.
