Report: Cardinals will not use RFA tender on WR Trent Sherfield

The Arizona Cardinals have three core special teams players who are schedule to become restricted free agents. If the Cardinals so choose, they can control those players’ destination in 2021 if they give them a restricted free agent tender.

Receiver Trent Sherfield is one of those players, but according to a report form NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, they will not tender Sherfield and if he does not re-sign with the team before free agency officially begins on the 17th, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

The decision should not be a surprise.

To give Sherfield even the lowest tender — the ability to match any potential contract he is offered — would pay Sherfield more than $2.1 million.

That is a lot to pay a special teamer who only played 79 offensive snaps as the team’s last receiver on the depth chart.

Of course, this doesn’t mean he won’t re-sign. He isn’t likely to get offered anything comparable to that. The Cardinals very possibly will re-sign him to something less than the lowest tender but more than the league minimum of $920,000 for a fourth-year player.

He had five receptions for 50 yards last season and added 10 special teams tackles and two fumble recoveries.
