Report: Cardinals to make DeAndre Hopkins highest-paid WR with extension

The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly closing in on a contract extension for star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. It is going to be a record deal.

According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, Hopkins is about to become the league’s highest-paid receiver.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones’ deal averages $22 million over three years. New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas received more than $60 million in guarantees in his five-year deal.

When the deal is done, Hopkins’ new contract will probably surpass that in guarantees.

The Cardinals acquired Hopkins this offseason knowing he wanted a new deal. He has three years remaining on his current contract but it has no guarantees remaining. He is scheduled to earn $12.5 million in 2020, $13.5 million in 2021 and $13.92 million in 2022. As he is arguably the best receiver in the NFL, he wishes to be paid as such.

Hopkins’ contract will be the second record deal the Cardinals give out this year. They recently made safety Budda Baker the highest-paid safety in NFL history.
