Report: Cardinals add $4M in cap space by restructuring Chandler Jones’ contract

The Arizona Cardinals, according to the NFLPA salary cap report, already had more than $7 million in salary cap space. They are about to gain more cap space.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cardinals restructured outside linebacker Chandler Jones’ contract, freeing up $4 million.

Jones was scheduled to make $16.5 million in base salary. If $4 million was freed up, it means they paid him $6 million of the salary up front now as a bonus.

He gets $6 million now and will be paid the rest of his $10.5 million salary over the course of the season. It will come at a cost of adding to his cap hit in 2020 and 2021. The restructure will add $2 million to his cap hit those seasons.

This season, his cap hit is now $15.5 million. Next year, it will go up to $21 million and it will be $20.5 million in 2021, the final year if his contract.

We will see of the Cardinals make a move now with added cap space or if somebody gets a contract extension.
