Report: Cameron Meredith agrees to pay cut, saving $2.3M salary cap space

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Cameron Meredith agreed to take a pay cut, lowering his 2019 salary cap hit from $6.45 million to $4.15 million. The Saints saved $2.3 million in salary cap space, and Meredith gets to remain with New Orleans to compete for a spot on the 2019 opening-day roster. This was accomplished by reducing Meredith’s base salary to $1.3 million; the contract he signed last year put him at $3.4 million. Field Yates of ESPN first reported Meredith’s pay cut.

Meredith dealt with prolonged knee issues in 2018 related to a previous injury he suffered with the Chicago Bears. His season ended just a few weeks into the regular season after he went through a scope to reduce swelling in his surgically-repaired knee. Fortunately, Meredith is expected to be ready for offseason workouts after April’s draft.

The big receiver showed signs of life despite his struggles with injury. He only played in one preseason game but caught both passes sent his way for 72 yards and a touchdown. In the regular season, Meredith caught 9 of 10 targets for 114 yards and a touchdown, but played only six games before he was shut down. His role in the Saints offense is crystal-clear and, if he can get healthy, there’s no reason he shouldn’t reach it.
