Report: Cam Newton will throw at Panthers practice today

According to a report by Jourdan Rodrigue at the Athletic, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will throw a little at practice today.

Newton is recovering from a mid-foot sprain he suffered in last week’s preseason loss to the Patriots. Typically, it takes two weeks to recover from that. It sounds like Newton’s timeline will be a bit faster.

While he left Gillette Stadium in a walking boot, it didn’t take long for him to shed it. The day after the injury, general manager Marty Hurney said the team was cautiously optimistic Newton would play Week 1 against the Rams. Over the weekend, Ian Rapoport at NFL Network reported that the team will not be bringing in another quarterback.

It’s highly unlikely Newton will play in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Steelers, but these are all positive signs that he’ll start against LA.
