Report: Bryce Young, Panthers should have deal done ‘well in time’ for training camp

The count continues, as it’s now been 83 days that Bryce Young hasn’t been an officially contracted member of the Carolina Panthers. But don’t sweat it much longer.

According to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the rookie quarterback is expected to finally sign his rookie deal within the coming days. Jones writes that his pen should hit the paper before the start of training camp next week:

As Joel Corry correctly noted last week, sources tell CBS Sports the primary issues involve signing bonus deferrals and offsets.

But another source indicated the deal should get done well in time for the start of camp, where Young would resume taking the first-team reps after getting the QB1 nod during June OTAs.

Corry, a former sports agent, surmised that Young is looking to receive his signing bonus in a lump sum rather than in multiple installments. While that hasn’t been the modus operandi for the Panthers and their recent first-round selections, the draft’s last three No. 1 overall picks—Jacksonville’s Travon Walker and Trevor Lawrence and Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow—all collected their bonuses in one amount.

Young and the rest of Carolina’s rookie class are set to report to Spartanburg, S.C. for the start of camp on Saturday.
