Report: Broncos considered Nick Foles before reaching deal for Joe Flacco

Before the Denver Broncos agreed to trade for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, the team did “kick tires” on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Part of the reason why Denver decided on Flacco was his familiarity under center, according to Klis. In Philadelphia, Foles has played mostly in shotgun formations, and Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello often has his QBs line up under center.

Another possible reason is salary. Flacco has a base salary of $18.5 million this year, and Foles could earn more than $25 million. Trade compensation could be part of the equation as well.

According to Klis, Denver is expected to trade a fourth-round pick to Baltimore for Flacco (the trade won’t become official until March). The Eagles will likely demand at least one first-round pick in exchange for Foles.

Earlier this offseason, Las Vegas correctly predicted that the Broncos would have major interest in both Flacco and Foles.
