The Cincinnati Bengals cut linebacker Vontaze Burfict on Monday in a cost-cutting move.
But the Bengals did shop around the embattled linebacker before deciding to cut ties, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Presumably, the Bengals reached out to the Oakland Raiders. A report last year stated the Raiders and former Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther reached out about a Burfict trade, which the Bengals declined.
Regardless, Burfict’s incredible list of suspensions and lost salary likely made teams balk at the idea of a trade. He also took a major step back last season, if not outright gave up when actually on the field before suffering a seventh career concussion (that we know of), which has brought up questions about his playing future.
Burfict will probably land on his feet elsewhere, but it’s clear the Bengals were done with the situation.
