Report: Bengals ready for a Joe Mixon holdout if necessary

It’s no secret the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Mixon could be headed toward a holdout if a long-term deal isn’t reached this offseason.

That’s especially worth pointing out again after Carolina just made Christian McCaffrey one of the NFL’s highest-paid backs on his extension.

Right on cue, here’s a note from Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic: “Joe Mixon. He enters his contract year with the organization prepared for a holdout if they can’t agree to a long-term deal.”

A prior report suggested the Bengals are closer to an extension with A.J. Green than they are with Mixon.

And that prior report isn’t much of a surprise as the team has had more than a year to work with Green on his. Mixon just became available for extension. Sprinkle in a big contract for Giovani Bernard already on the books and general positional value and one could see why a Mixon holdout could be on the way.

With names like Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon settling for smaller-than-expected deals while the market seems to reset, a Mixon holdout will likely hinge on whether he’s demanding McCaffrey-type money or something more in line with the adjusting market.
