Report: Bears involved in trade talks for Matthew Stafford

The Chicago Bears are expected to be big players in the quarterback market this offseason, which really comes as no surprise for a team that hasn’t had a franchise quarterback in decades.

But with the futures of general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy in jeopardy, they’re likely going to make a splash this offseason. Whether that’s in free agency, the NFL draft or via trade remains to be seen. But there’s no doubt they’re exploring all avenues.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is on the trade block, and he’s had no shortage of suitors. There’s a belief that Stafford will be traded before the Super Bowl next Sunday.

According to MMQB’s Albert Breer, there have been seven teams that have shown strong interest in trading for Stafford, including Washington, Carolina, New England, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams and, yes, the Bears.

Breer went on to discuss how he believes the Lions will get at least a first-round pick, perhaps a first-round pick and something else for Stafford.

While he says Stafford would prefer to go to California with the 49ers or Rams, Breer says they might not have as enticing an offer as other teams in the race.

It still doesn’t seem likely that the Lions would trade Stafford within the division barring a trade offer they simply can’t refuse. But you have to admire the Bears are aggressively pursuing some great quarterback options this offseason, whether that’s Stafford or Houston’s Deshaun Watson.

Still, this Stafford trade discussion is about to ramp up heading into Super Bowl week.
