Report: Backup quarterback Geno Smith to re-sign with Seahawks

The Seahawks will have someone to back up quarterback Russell Wilson after all. In a very unsurprising move, Seattle will be signing Geno Smith back to the roster.

After competing with Paxton Lynch for the job all summer, both quarterbacks were released during the Seahawks’ 53-man roster cuts on Saturday, leaving no backup quarterback on the squad.

“I thought he looked really good,” coach Pete Carroll said of Smith’s performance in the preseason finale against the Raiders. “I thought he did a nice job. A great couple balls down the field. A great touchdown pass to Terry. It was a beautiful play. I think he was 5 for 7, or something like that, in the first half, and looked pretty good, or 4 for 7. He looks in control of the offense. He gets it.

“He really understands it, so that’s a real positive.”

The Smith signing is expected to occur once the trade for defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been finalized, opening up a spot on the roster.

Lynch cleared waivers unclaimed and is now a free agent.
