Report: Austin Cutting has won Vikings long snapper job

Sunday has been a busy day for the Vikings special teams unit.

Hours after trading for kicker Kaare Vedvik, Tom Pelissero from NFL Network reported that the Vikings will release long snapper Kevin McDermott, meaning rookie Austin Cutting has won the job.

More #Vikings special teams changes: They informed veteran long snapper Kevin McDermott they’re releasing him, per source. McDermott held the job for 4 years and earned contract extension, but they’ll go with draft pick Austin Cutting. Starting over under new STC Marwan Maalouf.

This was pretty predictable considering the Vikings used a seventh-round pick on Cutting, something that’s rare for a team to do to select a long snapper.

McDermott had been the team’s long snapper since the 2015 season.
