Report: A.J. Green and Bengals remain far apart on extension talks

Just a day removed from Cincinnati Bengals wideout A.J. Green saying “let me go” if the team didn’t want to give him a long-term deal, a new report suggests the two sides aren’t even close to wrapping up an extension.

According to Tyler Dragon of  the Cincinnati Enquirer, “the two sides remain far apart” and “aren’t close.”

It was easy to read between the lines on Green’s comments Wednesday. He had noted he was the reason extension talks stalled while he worked on getting healthy. Now that he’s expected to return after the bye, talks are back on.

Green says he doesn’t want the franchise tag and would consider it an insult. But it is a possible piece to the equation here that could come up given Green’s injury history and age.

It is at least a little interesting the Bengals front office apparently wasn’t working harder on something before the trade deadline. Even Andy Dalton admitted his agent was looking at trades.

Given how this has unfolded so far, Bengals fans would be right to fear a little Andrew Whitworth-type situation here. But with negotiations fully back on, the coming months could see plenty of ebbs and flows like this leak public.
