Report: 49ers to sign OL Tom Compton

The 49ers on Thursday added interior offensive lineman Tom Compton according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. The report of Compton’s signing came down shortly after Adam Schefter reported the team would be releasing offensive lineman Mike Person.

Compton, 30, is an eight-year NFL veteran with 35 starts in 99 games for five different teams. He spent 2016 in Atlanta when Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator, although he only played 69 offensive snaps all season. He also played for two years under Shanahan in Washington after they drafted him in the sixth round in 2012.

His one-year deal with the 49ers is worth $3 million according to Matt Barrows of the Athletic.

San Francisco now has several options to replace Person at right guard. Compton will enter into a battle with Ben Garland, Daniel Brunskill and perhaps a draft pick.

This is the first free agency add from another team this offseason. All of the other 49ers’ free agent signings have been their own players from last year’s roster.
