Report: 49ers to sign journeyman offensive lineman

The 49ers are set to sign their replacement for injured offensive lineman Shon Coleman. They’re going to acquire journeyman offensive tackle Sam Young according to Pro Football Talk.

Young will step in and compete for the swing tackle job after Coleman suffered a gruesome lower leg injury just four plays into Saturday’s preseason opener against the Cowboys. Coleman was the starting left tackle with a host of starters resting.

With Coleman going on IR, San Francisco needed some additional, experienced tackle depth. Young has been in the NFL since 2010 when the Cowboys drafted him in the sixth round out of Notre Dame. He’s bounced around a ton since playing his rookie season for the Cowboys, including stints in Buffalo, Jacksonville and Miami. The 32-year-old has 88 games under his belt with 21 starts in his nine seasons.

The swing tackle job is wide open after some lackluster performances on the offensive line Saturday. Young should step in and compete for that spot right away since he’s replacing the frontrunner for the job.
