Report: 49ers to hold workout with Delanie Walker

There’s a chance that tight end Delanie Walker could return to where it all started for him in the NFL.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Walker will have a workout with the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday:

Walker, 36, was a sixth-round pick of the Niners in 2006. After spending the first seven years of his career in the Bay Area, Walker moved to the Tennessee Titans from 2013 to 2019.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter previously reported in early March that Walker did plan to return to football in 2021 still. Walker has not played since 2019 when he suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

In 2020, COVID-19 kept some players away from the NFL via opt-outs, but according to Titans Wire, Walker did not play last season partially due to injury issues. He wanted to rest and recover his body after two straight injury-shortened seasons.

With the 49ers, Walker would have an opportunity to play in a No. 2 role behind All-Pro tight end George Kittle.

After starting his career with San Francisco, Walker’s production took off in Tennessee. His first seven-year stint with the Niners included 123 receptions for 1,465 yards and eight touchdowns. In some categories with the Titans, Walker more than doubled his production in his seven years in Nashville. Included among those are his number of touchdown catches, which totaled 28 with the Titans.
