Report: 49ers set to add another undrafted rookie

The 49ers are adding another undrafted rookie a few days into camp. Syracuse safety Evan Foster is set to become the newest member of San Francisco’s secondary according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Foster started at strong safety for three years with the Orange and posted the ninth-most tackles by a defensive back in school history per the Syracuse Athletics site. He played in 46 of his 49 games across four seasons, including 37 starts over his final three years. Foster finished his time in college with two interceptions, 12 pass breakups and 234 tackles.

It’s unclear whether San Francisco will use him as a linebacker or safety. At 6-0, 215 pounds he’d need to add some bulk to play full time as a linebacker, so he could see reps at strong safety right away.

There’s not a ton of depth behind starter Jaquiski Tartt. The 49ers will add veteran Johnathan Cyprien who’s played in just 15 games since 2017. Marcell Harris is still on the roster and served last year as the primary backup. San Francisco also signed undrafted rookie Jared Mayden out of Alabama.

Foster’s a long shot to push for a roster spot, but he could be a practice squad candidate if he plays well in camp.
