The 49ers didn’t wait around to let Mike Person hit the open market. Their starting right guard agreed to a three-year deal to stay in San Francisco according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The report was confirmed by Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee.
Person, 30, was going to be an unrestricted free agent after playing on a one-year deal with San Francisco last season. He played and started in all 16 games in his sixth NFL season.
The 49ers were Person’s fifth team. He won the starting right guard job in camp and did a terrific job as both a run and pass blocker alongside rookie right tackle Mike McGlinchey.
Continuity is key on the offensive line, and now the 49ers will return their entire starting five from last season.
Free agency is set to open March 13, with teams able to negotiate with other teams’ free agents starting March 11.
Person was the first of the 49ers’ free agents to reach a deal with the team. They also franchise tagged kicker Robbie Gould.
