Report: 49ers add another former NFL WR to coaching staff

The 49ers aren’t done tweaking their coaching staff yet. Days after reports surfaced that former NFL wide receiver Wes Welker was coming on to Kyle Shanahan’s staff, ESPN’s Field Yates reported that former NFL receiver Miles Austin is doing the same.

Austin has a brief history with the 49ers head coach. He was a receiver for the Browns in 2014 when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator.

That stint with the Browns was part of a 10-year NFL career that spanned eight years in Dallas, one year in Cleveland and one in Philadelphia. Austin posted 361 career receptions, 5,273 yards and 37 touchdowns. He was a two-time Pro Bowler whose best year came in 2009 when he caught 81 balls for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He’ll be an offensive quality control coach according to Yates. It’s his first NFL coaching job. He was a scout for the Cowboys starting in 2016, and failed to land a receivers coach job in Dallas when he interviewed for it prior to last season.
