Repeat offender back in jail after spitting at police officers

A persistent offender who "has difficulty following the rules" is back in prison after spitting at police officers.

James Stevenson, 31, was jailed for 345 days at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted assaulting PCs Stuart Duncan and Andrew Kennedy in Turquoise Terrace, Bellshill, on March 16.

An allegation of threatening or abusive behaviour was dropped.

Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said Stevenson became aggressive after his arrest around 4.15am.

She told the court: "He drew back his head, loudly gathered saliva and spat twice at PC Duncan, narrowly missing him.

"He then lunged forward and spat at PC Kennedy, again missing.

"The accused was intoxicated and hostile."

Stevenson, a prisoner, who is originally from Airdrie, apologised through his solicitor, Ian Scott, who stated: "He doesn't know what motivated him to behave in this way.

"He has mental health issues and is someone who has difficulty following the rules.

"His record shows one short sentence after another. He has not engaged successfully with alternatives to custody."

Sheriff Linda Nicolson backdated the prison sentence as Stevenson has been in custody since March.
