Repeat Lanarkshire offender jailed after being found with blood on his face and carrying a knife

A repeat offender was seen carrying a knife on a bus only weeks after completing a two-year sentence for similar crimes.

A woman boarded the bus in East Kilbride to find fellow passenger James Fisher bleeding from a face wound and holding a blade.

She alerted the police and Fisher was later seen throwing the knife into bushes outside Hairmyres Hospital.

Fisher, 21, appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week and admitted carrying a flick knife on December 28.

Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said the female boarded the bus in the town centre about 2.25pm.

She noticed Fisher sitting alone, with injuries to his face.

He asked the woman to phone his sister and arrangements were made for him to attend hospital.

Ms McCabe told the court: "The woman then noted that he had a flick knife in his right hand.

"She got up from her seat before her stop and walked towards the front of the bus.

"The accused followed but she told him his stop, Hairmyres, was the last one on the route.

"A short time later a hospital security guard watching CCTV saw the accused acting erratically, trying to open doors and pacing about.

"He was seen throwing something into bushes. Police officers were advised and a flick knife with a three-inch blade was recovered."

Defence agent Stephen MacBride said Fisher was freed on November 5 after completing a sentence for carrying weapons.

The solicitor told the court: "He's not had the easiest upbringing and there are issues that he really has to resolve."

Sheriff Colin Dunipace jailed Fisher for a year and told the accused: "You now have at least four convictions for carrying weapons and the public must be protected.

"I recognise your young age and I hope that at the end of this sentence you try to get your life in order."
