Repair Shop viewers moved to tears over deaf man's battle to restore granddad's clock

BBC viewers tuning into last night's episode of The Repair Shop were in for an emotional ride as they took to Twitter to announce one guest's story had left them in tears.

Herbert Klein, who's deaf, revealed a sweet bond with his late grandfather who had "treated me no differently to a hearing person."

Appearing with son Joshua to convey his words, Herbert explained that his granddad had become like a surrogate father to him after his dad died when he was just four years old.

Herbert and Joshua brought along a ship-shaped clock, a gift from his granddad when he was very young.

He told experts Jay Blades and Steve Fletcher: "My father passed away when I was four, so my grandfather became like my father.

"He didn't treat me any different from a hearing person. He treated me exactly the same. He had a lot of care and love for me, and he'd always play around with me.

"We had great fun, and he loved me a lot."

Herbert had tried his own hand at fixing the old clock, but hadn't been able to and had lost a mechanism in the process.

Seeking out the teams expertise, he pleaded with them to help.

And in a sweet moment, Steve communicated with Herbert in sign language as he presented him with the restored heirloom.

"I want the world to see it, I want to show everybody," he told them.

"Thank you Steve for practising your sing language as well, I'm amazed at your sign language."

Viewers took to social media during the show, commending the emotional scenes for "knocking it out of the park."

"When I thought they couldn't get any more lovely, now the #repairshop gang have learned sign language," one tweeted.

"Emotional one tonight, isn't it?"

Another shared a crying gif and wrote: "Can we have a warning in front of #therepairshop in future? I'm actually ruined."

"This beautiful episode of #repairshop is so moving, wow, so bawling," a third commended.

And a fourth lauded: "#repairshop is such an awesome show, such a lovely bunch of talented and kindhearted humans, fills my heart with joy."

*The Repair Shop continues on Wednesdays, at 8pm, on BBC One.
