Repair Shop's Jay Blades beams as he proudly collects his MBE for services to craft

Repair Shop host Jay Blades looked as pleased as punch as he collected his MBE for services to craft at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

Dressed in a black tailcoat and grey suit, the presenter, 52, was awarded by the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony.

After receiving the honour, Jay beamed as he proudly held up his MBE in the grounds of the castle.

Jay stressed the importance of craft as part of a sustainable future, something which he spoke about with Charles as received the honour.

"It’s all about sustainability, it’s all about teaching the next generation as to what they should be doing and what they can do, because some people think craft isn’t accessible to them," he said.

"I want craft to be accessible to everybody, from the poor side of town to the rich side of town, so everybody can access it."

The presenter, who left school with no qualifications, featured in a programme earlier this year about his efforts to learn to read.

Ahead of the release of the BBC One film, Jay Blades: Learning To Read At 51, he shared his educational journey in the hope he could read his teenage daughter a bedtime story for the first time.

Blades, originally from Hackney in east London, has previously told how his girlfriend read him the letter saying he was being recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Upon hearing he would be made MBE, Jay said he was "completely over the moon".

"It is one of those things, when you grow up on a council estate in Hackney you don't expect things like that to happen and when they do it is like 'Wow, unbelievable'," he said.

Jay's dyslexia was not diagnosed at school.

The presenter had a troubled start to life suffering racism at school and from the police.

After working as a labourer, he went to to Buckinghamshire New University to study criminology aged 31 and it was then he was diagnosed with the reading ability of an 11-year old.

After Blades married, he set up a charity in High Wycombe to help young people in furniture restoration.

But when the charity lost funding and his marriage broke down, the presenter became homeless.

During the time, producers saw a short film about his charity which started his TV career.

Others who received honours on Tuesday included sportswomen Emily Scarratt and Ebony-Jewel Rainford-Brent, who were both made MBEs.

Scarratt is the vice captain of England women’s rugby team and is being honoured for services to rugby union, while Rainford-Brent – a World Cup winning cricketer and broadcaster – is being recognised for services to cricket and to charity.

Lauren Child, the author and illustrator who created the much-loved Charlie and Lola books, was given a CBE for services to children’s literature.
